Why a bigger AC is worse

Every instinct says round up. With air conditioning, rounding up buys you a machine that cools the air and leaves the humidity, and dies younger doing it.

Cooling is only half the job

An air conditioner does two things: it lowers the air temperature, and it wrings water out of the air as that air spends time crossing the cold indoor coil. The first job is fast. The second is slow; meaningful dehumidification only happens after the coil has been cold and airflow has been moving across it for a while.

An oversized unit smashes the temperature target in a few minutes and shuts off before the slow job gets anywhere. The thermostat is satisfied; the air is 72° and swampy. So you lower the setpoint to feel dry, which burns more power, which is how people end up colder and less comfortable than a correctly sized system would leave them.

Short cycling kills compressors

Starting a compressor is the hardest thing it does: inrush current, oil scavenging, pressure equalization. A right-sized AC on a design day starts a handful of times and runs long, steady cycles. An oversized one starts, sprints, stops, and repeats dozens of times a day. Wear concentrates in the starts. So does energy use: efficiency ratings assume steady-state running, and a unit that never reaches steady state never delivers its rated SEER2.

What "right-sized" feels like

Counterintuitively, a correctly sized AC barely keeps up on the hottest day of the year: long, nearly continuous runs, indoor humidity in the 45–55% band, every room settled. Design conditions are supposed to use nearly all the capacity; the other 360 days have margin built in automatically.

Practical sizing rules

  • Size to the load; the room calculator or central AC calculator gets you the budget number, a Manual J the real one.
  • Buy the next unit size at or above the load. Equipment comes in steps; landing one step high is normal, two is a mistake.
  • Inverter mini splits forgive mild oversizing (they throttle to 30–40% of rated output); but a 24k head in an 8k room still cycles.
  • Fix humidity complaints with sizing and runtime, not a lower setpoint.

How do I know if my AC is oversized?

Classic signs: it runs in short bursts (under 10 minutes) even on hot days, the house feels cold but sticky, rooms far from the thermostat never settle, and your summer humidity sits above 55–60%. An AC that almost never stops on the hottest afternoon of the year is sized correctly.

Is 30% oversized too much?

For fixed-speed equipment, yes; the usual guidance is to stay within about 15–25% of the design load. Inverter (variable-speed) systems tolerate more because they throttle down, but even they have a minimum output floor.

My contractor wants to "round up to be safe." Should I let them?

Ask them to show you the load calculation first. Rounding up from a measured Manual J number by one equipment step is ordinary practice; "going bigger to be safe" from a square-footage guess is how most oversized systems get installed.
